Ian Burgess

Ian was born in Montreal, Canada. He received his BSc with honors in Mathematical Physics with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, ON, Canada) in 2008. In June 2012, he sucessfully defended his PhD thesis, entitled "Wetting in Color" in the department of Applied Physics at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA, USA). His PhD work was supervised by Prof. Marko Lončar, and in close collaboration with Prof. Joanna Aizenebrg's group. In July 2012, he formally joined the Aizenberg group as a Wyss Technology Development Fellow. His research focuses on the development of dynamic optical materials based on structural color. Before coming to Harvard, he held research internships at l’Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Varennes, QC, Canada), McMaster University (Hamitlon, ON, Canada), and the Royal Military College of Canada (Kingston, ON). Outside of the lab, Ian enjoys playing hockey and golf as well as banging on one of his drum kits.
